The Memory Cathedral, by Jack Dann
Describes a “lost year” in the life of Leonardo da Vinci in which he is employed by an Arab noble as an engineer and and is called upon to build the military inventions that appear in his notebooks.
Mainspring, by Jay Lake
Set in a fantasy universe that actually runs on clockwork, a clockmaker’s apprentice must find the Key Perilous and wind up the Mainspring of the World.
Pasquale’s Angel, by Paul McCauley
A murder mystery set in an alternate 1518 Italy. Pasquale, a young artist, and Niccolo Machiavegli must find the identity of a killer in an industrialized world.
The Discworld series, by Terry Pratchett
Better known as satirical fantasy, the series follows the development of the Disc from a Renaissance-era society to modernity. Features a clockwork internet and a da-Vinci-esque “Leonard of Quirm”.

Short Stories & Novellas:
Da Vinci Rising by Jack Dann - an alternate history novella featuring Leonardo and a young Niccolo Machiavelli in 1480s Florence.
Finisterra by David Moles - a novelette that weaves together space travel, flying balloons, automatons and alternate history.
